FISH MOVING DEEP AS TEMPERATURES DROP

 

 

FISHING REPORT  12-14-11

BLACK BAYOU:  Crappie are fair around deep trees on shiners and jigs. Bass are slow to fair on soft plastics.

CANEY LAKE: Lots of yellow bass are being caught on small silver jigging spoons and the Bobby Garland Baby Shad Double Silver Rainbow in deep water. A good many largemouth bass are also being caught in the same area with tail spinners and jigging spoons picking up some fish down deep. Crappie have not yet made their move to deep water with scattered reports of catches made on shiners and jigs.

CHENIERE LAKE: Crappie are starting to bite with some nice fish caught in Puckett Lake on shiners as well as the Bobby Garland Baby Shad Pink Panther and Popsicle jigs with the Cajun Fry picking up some fish. No report on bass or bream.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: The lake is up at least a foot from last weeks’ rains. Crappie are just now beginning to show up in deep water out from the dam but anglers are having to contend with lots of small bar fish beating the crappie to the bait. Bass fishing has been fair to good with soft plastics taking some fish. No report on bream, catfish or stripers. For latest information, call Tim Lofton at Kel’s Cove at 927-2264.

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Last week’s rains put some current in the bayous and stained the water. Therefore, best crappie catches have been made in the big lake fishing the channel with jigs and shiners. Best catches are being made along channel edges fishing channel edges fishing 18 feet deep in 20 foot water. Most are hitting the Bobby Garland Blue Storm and Popsicle jigs. Some bream are still being caught fishing from the bank along Highway 2. Bass are fair on jigs fished around deep trees while catfish are biting cold worms.

OUACHITA RIVER: The river is rising and fishing has slowed. No decent fishing reports came in this week.  

LAKE POVERTY POINT: The crappie bite is on with limits being caught around the boat slips at the marina as well as the lower end of the lake. Best catches have been made on shiners as well as the Bobby Garland Baby Shad in Pink Pearl color. Catfish continue to bite cut shad and bass fishing has been fair.

LAKE ST. JOHN: Lots of crappie are being caught with most being taken on shiners. Bass have been fair with the Wobble Head picking up a few. Catfishing is good on cold worms or shiners. Call Doug Miller at Lake St. John Grocery (318-757-0013) for latest reports and fishing conditions.

FISHING REPORT  11-22-11

BLACK BAYOU:  Crappie are fair on jigs and shiners fished around moss and trees. Bass are fair on soft plastics and jigs.

 

CANEY LAKE: Reports are that the fish – bass, crappie and yellow bass – are showing signs of heading to deep water. A strong cold front will definitely push them deep as they follow the shad. Reports are starting to come in of yellow bass hitting jigging spoons fairly deep and once water temperatures drop significantly, they’ll be in 35-40 foot water. Crappie and bass are fair.

CHENIERE LAKE: Crappie fishing is improving in the Puckett Lake area on shiners and jigs. Bass have been fair on white/chartreuse spinner baits.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: Water temperatures have not dropped enough to send the crappie to the depths in the channels and out from the dam. Fishing has been fair with good catches one day; slow the next. Stripers are not schooling but a few have been caught trolling bucktails. Bass fishing is slow to fair while the catfish are slow. For latest information, call Tim Lofton at Kel’s Cove at 927-2264.

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Crappie fishing has been good along channel drops, particularly around the Highway 2 bridge, around Gill’s Ferry and the Hog Pen. Shiners and jigs, especially the Cajun Fry, Bobby Garland Blue Thunder and pink Black Lake hair jigs are working best. Some bass are being caught in the creeks and the edges of the sloughs on spinners with topwater lures picking up a few. Bream have slowed but catfishing is good on cold worms and night crawlers.

 

OUACHITA RIVER: Bass are fair on topwater lures and Carolina rigged worms fished at the mouth of the cuts and creeks. Crappie are fair around brush in the bayou.

 

LAKE POVERTY POINT: Crappie fishing continues to improve both around the boat slips at the marina as well as the south end of the lake in deeper water. Shiners and Bobby Garland Popsicle and Blue Grass jigs are working best. Catfishing is good while there are no reports on bass or bream.

LAKE ST. JOHN: Catfishing is good on yo-yos baited with cold worms or shiners. Crappie fishing is picking up on both shiners and jigs. No report on bream or bass. Call Doug Miller at Lake St. John Grocery (318-757-0013) for latest reports and fishing conditions.

LAKE YUCATAN: The water is rising significantly and fishing has been off. However, crappie and bream are just now beginning to bite. For latest information, call James Lachney at Surplus City at 318-467-2259.

 

 

 

FISHING REPORT  10-26-11

BLACK BAYOU:  Crappie fishing is fair on jigs and shiners fished around the grass beds.  

CANEY LAKE: The lake is 3-4 feet low because of lack of rain. Crappie are beginning to make the move toward deeper water and most are being caught mid-depth on jigs and shiners. Bass fishing has been fair on spinners, soft plastics and the Shaky Head jig. No report on bream and the yellow bass are slow to fair but should improve down deep as water temperatures drop.

CHENIERE LAKE: The lake has been lowered and fish are scattered. Crappie are best in open water with mixed sizes being caught on jigs and shiners. Bass are fair on spinners and soft plastic lures.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: Bass boats can now be launched from the improved ramp at Kel’s Cove. Fishing has been generally good with bass to 4 pounds caught off the points on crank baits and soft plastic lures. Crappie are improving on shiners and jigs fished around brush in 12-14 foot water. Stripers are schooling and hitting shad imitation lures early mornings and late afternoons. Bream have slowed while catfish are biting cold worms and shiners. For latest information, call Tim Lofton at Kel’s Cove at 927-2264.

LAKE D’ARBONNE: The crappie are beginning to move up the creeks and a good many are being caught on jigs tipped with shiners. Lots of smaller fish are biting around the Hwy 2 and Hwy 33 bridges on jigs and shiners. The bream have slowed but catfishing continues to be good on cold worms fished on the bottom. Bass are best up the creeks fishing spinners or Rat-L-Traps.

OUACHITA RIVER: Crappie fishing is improving around the submerged tops in the river as well as up the bayou fishing jigs or shiners 10 feet deep in 18 foot water. Bass are fair around the mouth of the creeks on shad imitation lures.

LAKE POVERTY POINT: Crappie fishing is beginning to pick up nicely around the boat slips at the marina with shiners or jigs working. Best jig colors are black/pink, Electric Chicken or the Bobby Garland Blue Thunder. Catfish are good on night crawlers. No report on bass or bream.

LAKE ST. JOHN: Catfishing is good on cold worms or shiners. Some nice bream have been caught on crickets in the afternoons. Bass fishing has been fair fishing jjigs fairly shallow. Crappie are slow. Call Doug Miller at Lake St. John Grocery (318-757-0013) for latest reports and fishing conditions.

LAKE YUCATAN: The lake is on a slow rise and fishing is good. Lots of nice crappie are being caught on jigs and shiners while some big bream are biting on crickets and worms. FISHING REPORT  9-7-11

BLACK BAYOU: No report.

CANEY LAKE: Quite a few bass under the slot are being caught between 6 and 9 in the mornings with plastic lizards picking up the most fish in 12-14 foot water. Catfish continue to be caught fishing liver on the bottom Crappie fishing has been fair on shiners while some chinquapins are still being caught on cold worms fished on the bottom.

CHENIERE LAKE: The lake is appears to be undergoing a “turn over” as the water is red and fishing in general is quite slow.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: The lake is being lowered a total of 7 feet and the drawdown has begun. However, since the water is already some four feet below pool stage, the drawdown will be only another three feet. Bass fishing is reportedly pretty good with most caught around the banks fishing plastic worms. Anglers are urged to exercise caution because underwater obstructions are more likely to pose danger. 

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Crappie fishing is fair in the sloughs on shiners and jigs with best catches coming from 8-12 foot water. Lots of catfish are being caught fishing cold worms off the banks while some are still catching plenty of bream on crickets and worms. Bass fishing has been rather slow with a few caught on soft plastics along channel drops.

OUACHITA RIVER: The fresh water from last week’s rains should improve fishing in the river. Crappie are fair in the bayou and river lakes on shiners or jigs. Bream are fair on worms and crickets. Look for bass in breaking schools in the river where they’ll hit shad imitation lures.

LAKE POVERTY POINT: Catfishing continues to be the best bet on this lake with some good sized channel cats hitting cut shad. Bream are fair on crickets and worms. Bass fishing is improving while crappie are still rather slow.

LAKE ST. JOHN: The tropical storm dumped 7 inches of water on the lake and fishing has slowed until things settle down. Call Doug Miller at Lake St. John Grocery (318-757-0013) for latest reports and fishing conditions.

FISHING REPORT  8-31-11

BLACK BAYOU: No report.

CANEY LAKE: Bass are fair early mornings fishing along the banks on Rat-L-Traps. Bigger fish to 9 pounds are being caught on deeper humps on Ole Monster worms, Emerald Green color. Crappie are fair on jigs fished around structure while some blue catfish to 10 pounds are biting cold worms on the bottom along the old road bed around Ebenezer Landing. Chinquapins are biting cold worms fished on the bottom early mornings.

CHENIERE LAKE: Bream are fair to good fishing worms, crickets and small spinners around the trees. Bass are hitting buzz baits and topwaters early mornings. Crappie are scattered around the trees and fishing is slow to fair.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: The big news involves hybrid stripers. Fish from 2 to 4 pounds are schooling and hitting shad colored grubs, such as the cockahoe minnow, early mornings especially when there is cloud cover. Bream fishing has been good on crickets and worms fished in 8-10 foot water. You have to keep on the move picking up a few here and there. Bass are fair early and late with watermelon colored Brush Hogs picking up a few. No report on crappie.

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Crappie fishing is fair with best catches coming from 8-12 foot water along the edge of the channel. Both jigs and shiners are taking fish. Catfish are bream continue to bite cold worms and red wigglers fished off the banks. Bass fishing is slow to fair with a few caught early mornings on topwater lures or on plastic worms fished along the channel drops later in the day.

OUACHITA RIVER: Crappie fishing is best in the river lakes and bayous where there is no current. Best bet is to drift jigs or shiners. Bream are fair on worms and crickets. Bass are schooling some and hitting shad imitation lures at the mouth of the cuts in the river.

LAKE POVERTY POINT: Bream fishing is fair on crickets and worms. Catfish are fair to good on cut bait and cold worms. No report on bass or crappie this week.

LAKE ST. JOHN: New owner of Lake St. John Grocery, Doug Miller, (318-757-0013) reports that catfishing is good while the bream are fair. Crappie and bass are slow.

BLACK BAYOU: No report.

 

CANEY LAKE: Bass are schooling early mornings with some hitting topwater shad imitation lures with plastic lizards picking up a few. Some crappie are being caught around submerged brush with jigs picking up some hand-sized fish. Chinquapins are on the deeper flats and are biting cold worms. Catfishing is fair to good fished beef liver on the bottom fairly deep.

CHENIERE LAKE: Bream fishing has been best casting Road Runners or other small spinners around the base of trees. Crickets and worms are picking up a few. Bass fishing is best early mornings on topwater baits while the crappie are scattered and slow.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: Bream fishing is fair to good on crickets and worms fished in deeper water just off the bedding areas. Bass fishing is fair with best catches made at night on black spinner baits or dark colored plastic worms. Crappie are slow. Stripers up to four pounds are schooling early mornings and hitting clear Tiny Torpedos and Cocahoe minnow jigs on grub heads.

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Some crappie are being caught fishing jigs or shiners 11 feet deep in the channels in the hottest part of the day. Also, some are being caught in the bayou below the spillway. A good many big bream are being caught off the banks on crickets and worms while catfishing continues to be going strong fishing cold worms on the bottom. Bass fishing in general is rather slow.

OUACHITA RIVER: Crappie fishing is best drifting shiners and jigs around structure in the bayou. Bass are fair on shad imitation lures in breaking schools in the river. Bream are fair on crickets and worms.

 

LAKE POVERTY POINT: Bream fishing is fair on crickets and worms. Bass are fair early mornings on topwaters and soft plastics. Crappie are slow. Catfishing is good on cut shad.  

LAKE ST. JOHN: Catfish are biting cold worms. Bream are fair to good on worms and crickets. Bass are best early mornings on topwaters and spinners. Crappie are slow.

Crappie are fair on shiners or jigs fished around brush 12-14 feet deep. Chinquapins are on the deep flats with some caught on cold worms. Catfish are biting on beef liver fished on the bottom.

 

CHENIERE LAKE: The bream are off the beds and around the trees with some hitting small spinners, worms or crickets. Bass are fair on the Wobblehead and topwaters while the crappie are slow.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: Stripers are schooling early mornings and hitting topwater lures and bucktails. Most are in the two to four pound range. Bream fishing is best fishing crickets or worms 8 feet deep. Catfishing is fair on night crawlers. Bass and crappie are slow.

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Best fishing continues to be for bream and catfish fishing worms and crickets off the banks. Crappie are fair with some caught drifting shiners of jigs 6-10 feet deep in 14-16 foot water. Bass are slow to fair with a few caught on topwaters early mornings around the grass. Carolina rigged plastic worms are taking a few fish along the side of the channel drops.  

OUACHITA RIVER: Bass are schooling in the river around the mouth of the creeks and along the sandbars. Shad imitations are working best. Some crappie are being caught in the bayou drifting shiners or jigs. Bream fishing is fair on crickets and worms.

 

LAKE POVERTY POINT: Catfishing is good on cut shad while the bream are fair to good on crickets and worms. Crappie fishing is slow while bass are fair. A couple of bass over 8 pounds were brought in this week.

LAKE ST. JOHN: Bream fishing has been good on worms and crickets. Catfishing is good on shiners and cold worms. Bass are fair while crappie are slow.

CANEY LAKE: Bass fishing has been best at night with a 10 pounder reportedly caught on an 11 inch plastic worm. Slow rolled dark spinner baits are picking up a few as well while topwater shad imitations are working on smaller schooling bass. Crappie fishing has been fair at night fishing shiners around the lights. Bream are best on crickets and worms and are biting best late afternoons.

CHENIERE LAKE: Bass are fair early mornings on topwater lures, buzz baits and plastic worms. A few crappie are being caught on jigs or Beetle Spins around the base of shady trees. Bream are fair on worms and crickets.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: A few stripers are being caught trolling bucktails or casting shad imitations to breaking schools. Bream fishing is fair on crickets and worms fished 8-10 feet deep. Crappie fishing is fair at night and early mornings fishing shiners or jigs around deep brush. A few bass are being caught very early in the morning on topwater lures and plastic worms. Catfish are biting on the bottom on a variety of baits.

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Bream and catfish continue to bite crickets and worms fished off the banks. Crappie fishing has been best fishing jigs 6-8 feet deep in 14 foot water in the sloughs. Bass are slow to fair with a few caught on topwaters early mornings around the grass with plastic worms picking up some in deeper water later in the day.

OUACHITA RIVER: Crappie fishing has been fair in the bayou drift fishing jigs. Bass are fair on plastic worms and crank baits. Bream are fair.

CANEY LAKE: Bass fishing continues to be fair with best catches made at night on the humps and coves on slow-rolled spinners and black plastic worms and lizards. Some are schooling during the day and hitting topwaters and crank baits. A few crappie are being caught at night fishing shiners around deep tops. A few chinquapins are being caught fishing the 8-10 foot flats with cold worms and red wigglers.

 

CHENIERE LAKE: Bass fishing has been fair early mornings on topwater lures, buzz baits and plastic worms. Crappie are slow to fair with some hitting Beetle Spins around the trees. Bream are fair on worms and crickets.

 

LAKE CLAIBORNE: Bream fishing continues to be fair fishing crickets or worms 8-10 feet deep. Crappie fishing has been fair at night under submersible lights fishing shiners around sunken brush. Bass are fair at night but they’re running rather small. Stripers are schooling off and one with a few being caught on shad imitations and white bucktails.

 

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Bream and catfish continue to bite crickets and worms fished off the banks. Crappie are in the sloughs with some caught spider rigging jigs or shiners 5 to 8 feet deep over 15 foot water. Bass are slow to fair with best time to fish early mornings on topwaters and buzz baits. Carolina-rigged worms fished along channel drops are picking up a few fish as well.

 

OUACHITA RIVER: Crappie are fair in river lakes on jigs or shiners for suspended fish. Bass are best fishing shad imitations along the edges of the sand bars.

 

LAKE POVERTY POINT: Bream and catfish are fair on cold worms and night crawlers. Bass and crappie are slow.

 

LAKE ST. JOHN: Bream are fair on worms and crickets. Catfish are biting shiners and cold worms on yo-yos. Bass are best early mornings on topwater lures. Crappie are slow.

CANEY LAKE: Some bass are schooling and hitting shad imitations. Better results have come at night fishing black spinner baits, plastics worms and lizards fairly shallow. Chinquapins are fair on the deeper flats fishing with cold worms. Crappie fishing is slow to fair on jigs or shiners. Catfishing is fair on cold worms and chicken liver fished on the bottom.

CHENIERE LAKE: Bream fishing has been fair to good on worms and crickets. Bass are best early mornings on topwaters and buzz baits with Wobbleheads picking up some around grass later. Crappie are scattered and slow.

LAKE CLAIBORNE: Bass to near 5 pounds have been caught at night on black spinners and plastic worms. Bream have moved deeper but some are still being caught on crickets and worms. Crappie fishing has slowed. Stripers are schooling off and on with a few being caught from breaking schools. Catfishing is slow.

LAKE D’ARBONNE: Bream and catfish continue to be caught on worms and crickets fishing off the banks and around the flats. Crappie fishing is fair with best catches made, as they usually are this time of year, during the heat of the day fishing jigs or shiners 8-10 feet deep along the edges of the channel. Bass are fair early and late on buzz baits and topwater lures while Carolina rigs and crank baits are better during the day.

OUACHITA RIVER: The river is at normal level. Bass fishing has been fair in the lakes and creeks on soft plastics and spinners. Crappie are best spider rigging jigs and shiners in the river lakes and creeks. Bream are fair around bedding areas.  

 

LAKE POVERTY POINT: Catfish are biting cold worms and cut shad while bream fishing has been fair to good on crickets and worms. Bass and crappie are rather slow.  

LAKE ST. JOHN: Catfishing is good. Bream are fair on worms and crickets. Bass and crappie fishing is slow.

LAKE YUCATAN: Although Surplus City is not ready for customers just yet, some are beginning to fish the lake. Look for a full report hopefully by next week.

CANEY LAKE - Bass good with some over 5 pounds being caught to 20 feet deep on 11 inch Red Shad Gambler worms both Texas and Carolina rig, also on deep diving SPRO crank baits. Bass are also schooling and hitting top water. Crappie fishing is fair around the tops on jigs and shiners. Bream fishing is good early and late on crickets and worms. Cat fishing has been good fishing with chicken or beef liver and cold worms on the bottom.

LAKE CLAIBORNE - Bass fair to good early late on top water lures shallow and in shady area. Crappie fishing is slow on shiners and jigs early. Bream fishing has been good around the beds with crickets and worms. Stripers are schooling and top water fishing is good.

LAKE  D'ARBONNE - Bass good early and late on top waters and buzz baits. Use worms on the edges of the channel during the day. Crappie fishing is fair in the channel using shiners. Bream are biting crickets and worms. Cat fishing is fair to good.

OUACHITA RIVER - Bass fishing is fair on crank baits and lipless cranks off points where there is current.  Crappie fishing is fair in the bayou using shiners or jigs.. Bream fishing is fair using crickets and worms.

LAKE POVERTY POINT –Bass and crappie fishing is slow. Bream are on the beds and biting crickets and worms. Cat fishing is good on cut bait and cold worms.

CANEY LAKE — Bass fishing has been good using 10”  plastic worms Texas rigged or Carolina rigged on humps and roadbeds.  Pop R’s are good early on secondary points and big crank baits off the deeper points. Crappie fishing is fair on jigs or shiners. Bream are hitting worms and crickets. Some catfish are being caught on rods and reels baited with liver.

LAKE CLAIBORNE —Big bream are being caught  using crickets or worms. Catfish fair on a variety of baits. Crappie is fair around the stumps and tops with some hitting shiners or jigs fished 10 to 12 feet deep in deeper water. The bass are on the flats next to deep water biting Carolina rigged plastic worms with some also being caught at night around lighted piers. Stripers are hitting white buck-tails, crank baits and silver spoons trolled in the open lake.

LAKE D'ARBONNE —Crappie fishing has been best on hair jig and shiners on the flats 7 feet deep in 15 foot water. Bass are hitting top waters and buzz baits early, later Carolina rigged big worms and jigs are picking up some fish. Bream fishing has been good on worms and crickets and catfish are biting cold worms.

OUACHITA RIVER — Bass fishing has been good in the bayou on big plastic worms and spinner baits fished around the cypress trees. Crappie are in the tops along the edge of the channel and are hitting shiners.  Bream are in the river lakes

BLACK BAYOU —Crappie are bunched up in spots if you can locate them, a good many are being caught on shiners. Bream are biting crickets and worms. Bass fishing is best fishing topwater lures or floating worms.

 

LAKE POVERTY POINT — Bream fishing has been good on worms and crickets. Crappie is slow while the bass are fair on big plastic worms and lizards. Cat-fishing is good using cut bait and cold worms.

LAKE ST. JOHN — Bass are fair on crank baits and spinners. Crappie are slow to fair. Bream fishing has been good on worms and crickets. Cat-fishing is good on cut bait, shiners or cold worms.

LAKE YUCATAN — No report.
